I felt extremely blessed last weekend to have the free opportunity to learn from Gustavo Ramos during his 3 day workshop here at Occidental. I had been following his work for some time and it was wonderful to get an insight into his process, materials and techniques. His whole palette is set up with transparent colors, except for white and radiant turquoise, which allows him to achieve very transparent luminous shadows. Also, his technique for turning form in the halftones using natural hair pointed round brushes and working very slowly and carefully with almost a tapping movement with his brush was something I had not tried before, and definitely want to continue to employ in future works. I was happy with the likeness I achieved, and even unlocked a new part of myself “chroma dan”. These workshops have surely been one of the highlights of the Seattle Prize so far. I look forward to more!
